A lot of children are still out of school for various reasons. The UNESCO Education for All Global Monitoring Report (EFA-GMR) puts the figure at 57 million children being out of school around the world and more than half of these are in conflict afflicted areas.
This staggering statistcs calls for global concerted efforts for peace to end armed conflict in war torn countries and it is also a clarion call on governments to double their efforts to ensure that education is provided as a basic right to all these children.
For those that are in school, it is also official that a vast majority of them leave or complete school without having successfully achieved the basic numeracy and literacy skills that they require in order to meaningfully develop their human potential and participate productively in their economies and national development programmes.

Disability still remains a major barrier in accessing education for most children. A lot of parents find it a huge challenge to put their children with disabilities into school. This challenge is even further exacerbated when schools are located far away from the children's homes making mobility a challenge especially where wheel chairs and crutches are unavailable.
Children with physical disabilities are intellectually normal and some are actually very intelligent and therefore need to be given an opportunity to learn and develop themselves as individuals who have a chance to enter the labour market and meaningfully particpate in developing their communities and countries at large.
Children with disabilities need to be included in the mainstream education and inclusion must be fostered in educational institutions where it is still a challenge. This also calls for adequate training of teachers for special education needs.
